The future of women’s football in our region is looking bright after a fantastic weekend at the 2025 Western United Cup in Ballarat, with Geelong teams taking home multiple trophies and strong results across all age groups.
The annual all-girls tournament, hosted at Morshead Park, featured 96 teams and more than 1300 players across nine age categories — making it one of the largest regional female football events in Victoria.
⚽ Football Geelong Representative Teams
U11 Girls – Champions
Football Geelong’s U11 Girls side were unstoppable across the weekend, finishing undefeated with seven wins from seven matches to claim the Gold Medal.
They netted an incredible 45 goals — the highest tally of any team in the tournament — and averaged over six goals per game.
After topping Group B, they defeated Elite FC Mariano 2–1 in the semi-final before sealing the title with a 2–1 Grand Final win over Williams Landing.
Coach Adrian Leijer praised the team’s unity, attacking play and determination, highlighting standout performances across the group, including a composed display in goals from captain Matilda Furness, who made key saves in the final moments.
U12 Girls – Quarter Finalists
The U12 Girls also did Geelong proud, finishing second in Group C after three wins and two narrow losses.
They progressed to the quarter finals, where they fell just short in a tight 0–1 loss to FC Strathmore.
The girls showed great development and teamwork throughout, holding their own against some of the strongest clubs in the state.
U14 Girls – Semi Finalists
Football Geelong’s U14 Girls were among the most consistent sides in their group, finishing top of Group B with 14 goals scored and only one conceded.
They advanced through to the semi-final, where they faced a strong Geelong Rangers outfit in an all-Geelong showdown.
Despite their efforts, Rangers edged through 2–1 in a closely contested match, with both teams demonstrating excellent quality and sportsmanship.
🌟 Other Geelong Clubs on Show
Alongside our representative squads, many local clubs proudly flew the Geelong flag at the Western United Cup, including:
Golden Plains, Surf Coast, Lara United, Ocean Grove, Geelong Rangers, Corio SC, North Geelong Warriors, and Geelong Galaxy.
There were more standout results for Geelong-based clubs:
- Geelong Galaxy U15 Girls topped their group and went on to win the entire tournament, taking out the gold medal with a 2–1 Grand Final victory over Menace FC.
- Geelong Rangers U14 Girls finished second in their group before claiming the Cup Final 1–0 against Football Tasmania, adding another title for the region.
- North Geelong Warriors U13 Girls also performed strongly, finishing first in their group and reaching the semi-finals before bowing out 0–1 to Spring Hills FC.
