Food Safety Training Guide for Club Volunteers

City of Greater Geelong have developed a Basic Food Safety Training Guide for Volunteers due to recent changes to the Food Standards Code. This means all food businesses who handle high-risk foods must ensure all food handlers, including volunteers, have adequate skills and knowledge in food safety and hygiene.

We would also recommend clubs subscribe to Council’s quarterly newsletter covering things like training, policy and helpful information for food related business and organisations.

The guide was developed after discussions with sports clubs and community groups, understanding the various levels of food handling experience of the volunteers and the frequency of how often they may help, our Environmental Health Team has developed a Basic Food Safety Training Guide for Volunteers that can be tailored to the requirements of your group.

Where possible the recommendation is that DoFoodSafely  a free online course by the Department of Health Victoria which is available in different languages is completed.

The Basic Food Safety Training Guide covers the following topics

  • Personal Hygiene
  • Food Handling
  • Food Contamination
  • Food Delivery, Storage and Display
  • Cleaning and Sanitising
  • Food Allergens
  • Sausage Sizzles

The training guide includes fact sheets / posters that can be printed and displayed

  • Golden Rules of Food Safety – all food handlers
  • Golden Rules of Food Safety – person in charge / Food Safety Supervisors / chefs and cooks
  • Keep hands clean and food safe
  • Food safety rules
  • Temperature zones for keeping food safe

Documented training is not required for ‘one off’ fundraising events – such as a ‘sausage sizzle’ however, clubs must still ensure food safety.

If any clubs require further information they can email  contactus@geelongcity.vic.gov.au and include the club name so the area officer can call them back to discuss.
