What a weekend of football brilliance!
Over the King’s Birthday long weekend, more than 100 teams and 1,500+ players from across the state converged on Albury for the 2025 Football Victoria Country Championships — and our Geelong Representative Teams brought the heat!
With over 200 matches played across three action-packed days, the tournament was a true showcase of grassroots football talent, and we’re incredibly proud of the heart, hustle, and teamwork displayed by every one of our players.
The Highlights:
- 7 of our Geelong teams made it to the semi-finals
- 4 teams progressed to the grand finals
- And our U11 Girls were crowned 2025 COUNTRY CHAMPIONS! 🏆👏
From our youngest to oldest squads, Geelong showed resilience, talent, and brilliant sportsmanship at every turn. Here are a few of the standout moments:
- U12 Boys: After a dream start with 4 wins from 4, the boys were narrowly defeated 1–0 by Albury in their final group game, which knocked the wind out of them. They gave it everything but fell 3–1 in the semis to a strong Sunraysia side.
- U16 Girls: In one of the weekend’s most determined efforts, the girls bounced back from three early losses to reach the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they ran out of legs against Albury, but their grit and team spirit were second to none.
- U14 Girls: What a battle! This team took their grand final to extra time, created several chances, and fought to the very last whistle. A heartbreaking loss on penalties, but an outstanding performance nonetheless.
- U14 Boys: Despite a strong campaign, the boys just missed out on finals on goal difference, finishing 5th. A solid effort from a tight-knit squad who gave it everything they had.
- U11 Boys North & South, U13 Boys: While these teams didn’t reach the finals, each played with passion and perseverance. The experience gained over the weekend will be invaluable in their development moving forward.
- U12 Girls: Competed fiercely throughout the tournament and were a great representation of Geelong’s growing talent in the junior girls space, finishing as runners up by a narrow loss of 0-1.
- U16 Boys: A huge effort from this talented group, who made it all the way to the grand final. They went down 1–0 in a hard-fought match, but their run was nothing short of impressive.
And of course, a special shoutout to our Under 11 Girls, who not only made the grand final but won it in spectacular fashion to become the 2025 Country Champions! Their effort, teamwork, and composure across the weekend were a joy to watch.
More Than Just Results
While not all the results went our way, the camaraderie between teams, the cheers from the sidelines, and the unwavering support from our coaches and families made it a weekend to remember. We’re confident this tournament has created lasting memories for everyone involved.
We’re now heading into a short break to allow our players, families, and volunteers to recharge before the next chapter: Western United Cup (Girls) and Mt Eliza Cup (Boys). Training for these will recommence the week of 21st July.
